Shearwater Tern dive computers

Shearwater Tern & Tern TX Dive Computers

Following their debut at DEMA 2023, the Shearwater Tern and Tern-TX dive computers have garnered attention for their compact design and versatile functionality. While both models share a sleek, lightweight profile reminiscent of the Teric, their feature set aligns more closely with the recreational Shearwater Peregrine. The Tern-TX, however, takes the capabilities a step further by introducing transmitter-enabled gas consumption monitoring, allowing divers to track their gas usage precisely. It also boasts a digital compass, enhancing underwater navigation.

Bring on the future with Shearwater Tern!

Designed with the sport diver in mind, Shearwater's new Tern  and Tern TX models are powerful, simple, reliable, and the most compact dive computers ever brought to market.

The Tern and Tern TX build upon the success of the popular Shearwater Peregrine dive computer while borrowing a watch-like round format similar to the more sophisticated (and expensive) Shearwater Teric, making them a great addition to Shearwater's product line.

In short, the Shearwater Tern can be seen as a lightweight and thinner Peregrine version of the Teric, while the Tern TX additionally draws on the air integration and digital compass functions of the Perdix 2.

But neither of these models has OC mixed gas technical and CCR modes, which, for their price point, should make them a hit among recreational Air and Nitrox divers who, in the majority, do not need those modes.

Designed and built in Canada, The Tern & Tern TX are depth rated to 120 metres and tested to engineering EN standards for dive computer compliance.

They both support Air, Nitrox, 3 Gas Nitrox, Gauge, and Freedive modes. They can log 500 diving hours and have a battery life of 20 hours with dive mode on.

We're so excited by the launch of the Tern models that promise to be very popular, we've already placed a large pre-order from Shearwater for stock.

  • Their battery life with dive mode on is 20 hours
  • They are charged wirelessly and support quick charge

The Tern TX Difference

In addition to all of the above, the Tern TX has two fundamental functional differences to the Tern.

  • It is transmitter-enabled to provide real-time gas pressure readings during a dive
  • It has a digital compass for underwater navigation

Simply put, the enhanced Tern TX boasts air integration similar to the Shearwater Perdix 2 and is capable of connecting with up to four Swift gas pressure transmitters as well as having a digital compass for superior underwater navigation.

In the words of Jason Leggatt, CEO of Shearwater Research Inc., “The Tern is an affordable option for anyone seeking a compact sport diving computer,” whereas the Tern TX brings transmitter-enabled computers to more divers, delivering precision gas pressure information on a brilliant display.”

“The Tern TX is an incredible sport-diving computer for those seeking a comfortable, round form. In combination with the Swift Transmitter, the Tern TX offers a world-class transmitter-enabled system at an attractive price”.
JASON LEGGATT, CEO SHEARWATER RESEARCH INC.

What's Missing?

As mentioned above, the Tern models look like a thinner and lighter version of the Teric but are more of a  Peregrine regarding functionality. The TX model adds gas monitoring integration and a digital compass into the equation.

Neither the Tern nor the Tern TX support OC technical (i.e. five gas) or CCR & CC bailout modes, which most sport divers do not need or use.

Shearwater TERN or TERN TX?

While both units are watch-style like the Teric, it is worth noting these are thinner and lighter than the Teric and are ideal recreational dive computers you can wear all day, anywhere.

Suppose you already have a transmitter or will consider purchasing one now or in the future for real-time gas consumption monitoring (with the additional benefit of a digital compass). In that case, the higher-priced Shearwater Tern-TX is the one to look for.

If you trust your existing compass and SPG gauge and are comfortable using both, the cheaper Shearwater Tern would be an equally good purchase.

We're excited to see Shearwater continue to push the boundaries of dive computer innovation with these two new wearable computer models.

These computers are sure to be a hit with recreational divers of all levels looking for a reliable, feature-rich, and stylish dive computer they can wear all day and dive.

If you love the Shearwater Peregrine Dive Computer as much as we do, you’ll love the Tern and Tern TX!
