Shearwater Tern Dive Computer

The Shearwater Tern dive computer is a powerful, simple, reliable, and compact watch-type computer designed with the sport diver in mind.

The Tern builds upon the success of the popular Shearwater Peregrine dive computer with an appearance similar to, yet lighter and thinner than, the Shearwater Teric

The difference between the Tern and the Shearwater Tern TX isn't just the silver bezel and button colour (as opposed to the TX's black), but also that the Tern (non-TX) isn't transmitter-capable and doesn't have a digital compass.

Neither Tern model has OC "mixed gas" technical and CCR modes as do the Shearwater Perdix 2, Teric and Petrel 3. However, both support Air, Nitrox, 3-Gas Nitrox, Gauge, and Freedive modes with 500 hours of log time, which is plenty for most divers.

The Tern & Tern TX are each depth-rated to 120 metres and tested to engineering EN standards for dive computer compliance.

Product FAQs

What are the main physical differences between the Tern, Tern TX, and Teric?
The most noticeable differences lie in dimensions, weight, and materials. The Shearwater Tern and Tern TX are designed to be much thinner, lighter, and more compact than their predecessor. They feature a 50mm diameter, a 16mm thickness, and weigh about 100g. They also sport a 1.3-inch AMOLED screen protected by toughened glass. You can tell the two apart visually by their bezels: the Tern has a silver steel bezel, while the Tern TX has an all-black bezel.

The Shearwater Teric is noticeably bulkier, built as a rugged, full-featured technical computer. It has a larger footprint (54.5mm x 53.5mm), a thickness of 17.5mm, and weighs about 120g. The Teric is built with premium materials, including a 316 stainless steel bezel and a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal window, which protects its slightly larger 1.39-inch AMOLED display.
Who are the Tern, Tern TX and Teric dive computers meant for?
• The Shearwater Tern is for the sport or recreational diver who wants a sleek, lightweight, everyday watch-style computer. It is perfect for those who do not use air integration, rely on a traditional analogue SPG and compass, and want Shearwater's legendary reliability at a more accessible price.

• The Shearwater Tern TX is designed for the avid recreational or entry-level technical diver who loves a compact form factor but demands modern tech. It is ideal for divers who want the convenience of air integration and a digital compass without paying for technical diving features they will never use.

• The Shearwater Teric is built for technical divers, mixed-gas divers, and rebreather (CCR) users who need advanced decompression software, a deep depth rating 200 metres, and premium sapphire crystal durability. It's the ultimate tool for serious divers who want a daily-wear dive watch without compromising on any advanced capabilities.
How does the battery life compare across the three models?
All three dive computers use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and support convenient wireless charging pads. However, due to its larger size and battery capacity, the Teric offers longer performance. In dive mode, the Teric delivers up to30 hours of continuous dive time (and up to 50 hours in watch mode).

By contrast, the slimmer profiles of the Tern and Tern TX mean a smaller battery footprint. Both the Tern and Tern TX provide up to 20 hours of continuous dive time at medium brightness. While slightly shorter than the Teric, this is still more than enough to cover a full weekend of heavy recreational diving on a single charge.
What are the key functional differences between the Tern and the Tern TX?
The Tern and Tern TX are identical in their physical dimensions, core software, and basic capabilities. Both support Air, single-gas Nitrox, 3-gas Nitrox, Gauge, and Freediving modes down to a maximum depth rating of 120m.

The Tern TX includes two major functional upgrades over the base Tern:
Air Integration (AI): It can connect with up to four Swift wireless transmitters to monitor real-time cylinder pressure and calculate your true Gas Time Remaining (GTR).
Digital Compass: It features a 3-axis, tilt-compensated digital compass for underwater navigation.

Summary: If you want tank pressure tracking on your wrist and a digital compass, you need to step up to the Tern TX.
How do the Tern and Tern TX differ from the Teric in terms of advanced diving modes?
While the Tern and Tern TX are optimised for recreational and entry-level technical diving, the Teric is a high-end, unlimited technical dive computer. The Tern models max out at 3-gas Nitrox decompression and a 120m depth rating. They completely omit multi-gas Trimix or rebreather capabilities.

The Teric, on the other hand, is built for the most extreme diving environments. It features a 200m depth rating and supports up to 5 open-circuit and 5 closed-circuit gases. It includes dedicated OC Technical (full Trimix) and CC/BO (Closed Circuit/Bailout) rebreather modes. It also includes full air integration and a digital compass out of the box.

If you're considering advancing to using OC or CC trimix, or eventually switching to a rebreather from Open Circuit, the Teric is the better option among watch-style Shearwater computers.
