Product FAQs
What's the physical difference between the Shearwater Teric and the Tern and Tern TX?
The Shearwater Tern and Tern TX are designed to be much thinner, lighter, and more compact than the Teric for sport and recreational divers. They feature a 50mm diameter, a 16mm thickness, and weigh about 100g. They also sport a 1.3-inch AMOLED screen protected by toughened glass. You can tell the two apart visually by their bezels: the Tern has a silver steel bezel, while the Tern TX has an all-black bezel.
How does the Teric differ from the Tern and Tern TX in dive modes?
On the other hand, the Tern and Tern TX are optimised for recreational and entry-level technical diving. The Tern models max out at 3-gas Nitrox decompression and a 120m depth rating. They completely omit multi-gas Trimix or rebreather capabilities.
Among the three only the Teric and Tern TX support air integration via transmitter and have 3-axis digital compasses.
If you're considering advancing to using OC or CC trimix, or eventually switching to a rebreather from Open Circuit, the Teric is the better option among watch-style Shearwater computers.
How long does the battery last?
But all three dive computers use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and support wireless charging via convenient pads.
The slimmer profiles of the Tern and Tern TX mean a smaller battery footprint. Both the Tern and Tern TX provide up to 20 hours of continuous dive time at medium brightness. While slightly shorter than the Teric, this is still more than enough to cover a full weekend of heavy recreational diving on a single charge.
How does the Shearwater Teric compare to the Perdix 2 Ti?
They are not functionally identical even though they both support the highest tier of diving—including Air, Nitrox, 3-Gas Nitrox, OC Technical (Trimix), CC/BO (Fixed PPO2) for Rebreathers, and Gauge modes. They also both offer Air Integration for up to four transmitters and 3-axis digital compasses.
However, there are several key functional, hardware, and interface differences between the two:
1. Freediving Mode
The Teric has a fully featured, dedicated Freediving mode with configurable sampling rates, specialised freediving alarms, and a stopwatch. The Perdix 2 Ti does not have a freediving mode.
2. Battery Type and Power Management
The Teric features a built-in, rechargeable lithium-ion battery. It provides up to 30 hours of dive time per charge and uses a wireless charging pad. The battery is not user-replaceable. The Perdix 2 Ti runs on a single, user-replaceable AA battery (Alkaline, Lithium, or Rechargeable NiMH/Saft). It offers roughly 40 to 100 hours of dive time, depending on the battery type used. This is a major functional advantage for remote technical divers who cannot easily recharge their gear.
3. Physical Form Factor, Screen, and Buttons
The Teric is a watch-style computer with a 1.39-inch AMOLED screen and four buttons. It is compact enough to wear as an everyday timepiece. The Perdix 2 Ti is a large, rectangular "slate-style" unit with a much larger 2.2-inch LCD screen. It uses just two large piezo buttons, which are far easier to operate when wearing thick drysuit gloves or mitts.
4. Alarms and Alerts
The Teric features both audible beeps and haptic vibration alerts. The Perdix 2 Ti relies entirely on a strong vibration motor and visual on-screen alerts; it does not have an audible speaker.
Which Shearwater computer should I get?
If you're on the technical diving route or already a technical diver, the choise would be between the Perdix 2 Ti, Petrel 3 and the Shearwater Teric.
