Shearwater Perdix 3 Silver and Black computers

Perdix 3 vs Perdix 2 - Shearwater Flagships Compared

The new Shearwater Perdix 3 builds on one of diving’s most respected platforms with a larger ultra-bright AMOLED display, refined user interface, expanded customisation, and new freediving capabilities.

In this comparison, we examine exactly how the Perdix 3 evolves beyond the hugely popular Perdix 2, including screen technology, software innovations, air integration, and overall usability.

We also explore why the Perdix 2 remains an outstanding choice for many divers, thanks to its proven reliability, familiar transflective display, technical-diving pedigree, and exceptional value. A guide for deciding which Shearwater flagship is right for your diving.

The Shearwater Perdix 3 is on the way…

For years, the Shearwater Perdix series has set the benchmark for premium dive computers. Worn by recreational and technical divers, hardcore cave and rebreather divers alike, it has earned a legendary reputation for being rugged, reliable, and impressively intuitive, easy to use and read.

When the Perdix 2 arrived, we assumed Shearwater had already achieved the highest level of refinement. However, Shearwater has once again exceeded expectations. The industry leader has officially introduced the Shearwater Perdix 3, which they describe as their "toughest and most capable full-size dive computer to date."

The Perdix 3 isn’t a radical departure from the Perdix formula but rather a thoughtful evolution of one of the most respected dive computers ever produced. That also says a great deal about its still-popular and outstanding-value predecessor, the Perdix 2.

Next Generation Screen Technology

The most obvious and spectacular upgrade on the Shearwater Perdix 3 is its ultra-bright AMOLED display, boasting a crisp resolution of 450 x 600 pixels. While retaining the same casing dimensions as the 2.2” Perdix 2, it’s upped the game with a larger 2.4” screen. In metric terms, Shearwater reports an increase in screen size from 5.59 cm to 6.1 cm.

This translates as 4x higher resolution on a larger, brighter display for improved visibility in all conditions.

It means that whether you are enduring a blindingly bright surface interval, navigating a low-visibility cave, or pushing past the twilight zone on a deep trimix dive, your critical dive data remains exceptionally clear and easy to read.”

To complement this stunning new screen, Shearwater has introduced a new "BIG" Layout option, which uses giant fonts to maximise readability. Divers who prioritise large, high-contrast data fields will appreciate this feature immediately.

Rugged To The Core

While it looks sharper, the Perdix 3 is also built like a tank. It’s encased in an armoured housing with a precision-machined titanium bezel. To protect that brilliant AMOLED display, Shearwater fitted a premium aluminosilicate toughened glass lens, giving it unprecedented impact and scratch resistance.

The computer retains Perdix 2’s impressive depth rating of 260 meters (850 feet) and utilises the reliable, robust titanium piezo-electric touch buttons that function flawlessly, even through thick neoprene or dry gloves.

Advanced UI and Software Innovations: Shearwater didn’t just swap out the hardware; it also substantially refined the software and user interface.

The Perdix 3 debuts a refined user interface that makes navigating sub-menus far more intuitive. Programmable quick‑change settings have been added to the menus to make it easy to switch between custom layouts and dive configurations. Check out all the upgrades below:

Shearwater Perdix 3: Standout Upgrades

  • Independent Setting Profiles: You can save up to three completely independent configuration sets. If you routinely switch between a recreational single-tank setup, a twinset technical rig, and a closed-circuit rebreather (CCR), you can instantly switch layouts and settings without manually changing every field.
  • Enhanced UI Menus: The updated user interface now shows the previous and next menu titles for easier navigation. More flexible home screen configurations.
  • Screen Layouts: 3 layout styles to choose from regardless of dive modes: Standard, Big, and Tec. The new BIG layout uses giant fonts for easy reading.
  • Security Enhancements: Encrypted firmware and optional PIN codes to protect unauthorised log viewing and Bluetooth connections.
  • Minimum dive time: You can set a dive time threshold so dives under this time are not logged.
  • Massive Customisation: Divers can choose from 14 colour options, resulting in thousands of display combinations tailored to your viewing comfort.
  • Surface GF ▲+5 Metric: A fantastic tool for technical divers, this new indicator shows how your surface gradient factor will change if you remain at your exact current depth for five more minutes.
  • Next-Gen Bluetooth: Wireless connectivity is now 6 times faster and secure, and it stays permanently paired once established for hassle-free log transfers.
  • Freediving Mode: In addition to the Gauge mode available in previous units, the freediving mode offers configurable sampling rates and alarms.

What Hasn't Changed

Thankfully, Shearwater kept the core DNA that made the line famous. The Perdix 3 still runs on a single, user-replaceable AA battery. You aren't tied to a proprietary charging cradle or lithium battery degradation over time. Throw in an Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA, and you'll get up to 60 hours of dive time—even with that high-brightness AMOLED display.

It also utilises the industry-standard Bühlmann ZHL-16C decompression model with user-adjustable Gradient Factors, a 3-axis tilt-compensated digital compass, and its signature, intense vibration warning alerts.

Final Thoughts

The Shearwater Perdix 3 is not a radical departure from the Perdix formula, but rather a thoughtful evolution of one of the most respected dive computers ever produced.

While the Perdix 2’s transflective LCD remains exceptionally readable in bright sunlight and has long been appreciated for its efficiency and clarity in real-world diving conditions, the Perdix 3’s AMOLED display delivers richer colours, deeper contrast, and dramatically improved low-light visibility.

Combining this with a refined software experience and rugged reliability, AA battery compatibility, and a technical-diving pedigree that divers already trust, Shearwater has once again raised the bar.

Importantly, none of this diminishes the Perdix 2, which remains an outstanding and highly capable dive computer in its own right. Instead, the Perdix 3 expands the range by offering divers another option tailored toward maximum screen clarity, customisation, and modern display technology.

As assessed by Scuba Diver Magazine, if you already have a Perdix 2, or even the original Perdix, the Perdix 3 upgrades "are probably not enough to justify a shiny new computer unless you've had a particularly rough day and you deserve to treat yourself. But it's nice to see that Shearwater are constantly evolving their range."

While the Perdix 3 isn't ridiculously expensive compared to Perdix 2, it isn't expected to be available in the UK until late June 2026. Meaning the Perdix 2 will probably hold its price and availability throughout most of the 2026 dive season.
