Why Portland?

We’re located on the Isle of Portland (in Dorset) because Portland has been one of the most popular scuba diving locations in the United Kingdom even before we set up operations here back in the year 2000.

On one side, we’re minutes away from the sheltered waters of Portland Marina and Harbour, while on the other, it’s just a brief walk to reach our famous scuba diving destination Chesil Cove and start of the 16-mile-long Chesil Beach.

Portland’s location makes it ideal for scuba diving, freediving, snorkelling and other surface water sports activities.

Check out how many wrecks we have around here by clicking on Scimitar Diving's Wreck & Dive Sites chart!

Alongside dive clubs, many instructors and dive schools travel here to train and offer scuba diving certification ranging from open water diver to mixed-gas tech diving or rebreather diving levels.

Whether you’re doing a boat dive from Portland Marina or Castletown or a shore dive at Chesil Cove, Portland is well known for offering many possibilities: Reef diving to wreck diving and night diving, underwater photography or underwater videography. Anything other than cave diving is possible here.

Likely being the best-stocked diving shop in the UK, at Underwater Explorers we offer in-store scuba diving equipment advice and sales, as well as gas fills, to locals and visitors (read About Us).

But... If you’re googling “scuba diving shop near me” like some, look no further, there's DirDirect online.

Here at DirDirect, we list our cutting-edge equipment for worldwide delivery and we’ve got you covered whatever your level of diving: We’re your local dive store wherever you are in the world.

All that with over 20 years of experience especially in technical diving, from training to equipment, advice and sales.

Whether you're a recreational or a professional diver, you'll find the extremely powerful Orcatorch D710 dive light is an excellent hand-held primary or a reliable bright backup torch.

With a 6º centre beam and high power setting of 1, 700 lumens, the OrcaTorch D710 is one of the strongest torches in its class but you have plenty of brightness settings if you prefer less power or need an urgent boost to your light.

With three standard output settings and a maximum 3,000 lumens power boost mode, the Orcatorch D710 covers almost all dive conditions and is depth rated to 150 metres.

At its high setting standard operating of 1,700 lumens, the approximate runtime (depending also on state of battery and ambient temperature) is 1 hours 40 minutes that increases to 3 hours 50 minutes at middle brightness of 800 lumens and 7 hours 40 minutes at 400 lumens.

A long press of the magnetic switch while the torch is switched on, will boost the light output to 3,000 lumens for a whole minute, making it ideal for reaching hard-to-see places, attracting attention or emergency signalling. The light will then return to its previous mode without having to switch on and off.

It runs on one Orcatorch 21700 5000mAh rechargeable battery with an integral Type-C charging port, making it easier for you to charge it anywhere without having to carry a charger.

Its safe lock function prevents accidental switching on, a battery indicator tells you what level the battery is, reverse polarity protection protects from improper battery installation and it comes with intelligent over-heat protection.

Add to that the latest diamond-grade hard anodised seawater-corrosion-resistance finish and double side coated toughened glass, this is a top torch in its class.

But if you're looking for something different in or under the £150 range check out the twist-head (no switch) reliable Orcatorch D700 or read our review comparing Top Dive Lights For Under £150.
