Why Portland?

We’re located on the Isle of Portland (in Dorset) because Portland has been one of the most popular scuba diving locations in the United Kingdom even before we set up operations here back in the year 2000.

On one side, we’re minutes away from the sheltered waters of Portland Marina and Harbour, while on the other, it’s just a brief walk to reach our famous scuba diving destination Chesil Cove and start of the 16-mile-long Chesil Beach.

Portland’s location makes it ideal for scuba diving, freediving, snorkelling and other surface water sports activities.

Check out how many wrecks we have around here by clicking on Scimitar Diving's Wreck & Dive Sites chart!

Alongside dive clubs, many instructors and dive schools travel here to train and offer scuba diving certification ranging from open water diver to mixed-gas tech diving or rebreather diving levels.

Whether you’re doing a boat dive from Portland Marina or Castletown or a shore dive at Chesil Cove, Portland is well known for offering many possibilities: Reef diving to wreck diving and night diving, underwater photography or underwater videography. Anything other than cave diving is possible here.

Likely being the best-stocked diving shop in the UK, at Underwater Explorers we offer in-store scuba diving equipment advice and sales, as well as gas fills, to locals and visitors (read About Us).

But... If you’re googling “scuba diving shop near me” like some, look no further, there's DirDirect online.

Here at DirDirect, we list our cutting-edge equipment for worldwide delivery and we’ve got you covered whatever your level of diving: We’re your local dive store wherever you are in the world.

All that with over 20 years of experience especially in technical diving, from training to equipment, advice and sales.

      Halcyon Eclipse Wing

The Halcyon Eclipse Wing is a doughnut-shaped back-mounted Buoyancy Compensator (BC) allowing divers to enjoy perfect horizontal trim underwater and minimising in-water effort.

A circular zipper around the inside of the Eclipse wing allows for easy inspection and replacement of the interior bladder if required. A drainage system in the bottom of the wing allows water to drain rapidly from the outer cover to minimise excess weight.

An inflator elbow strain relief constructed from two-inch nylon webbing minimises wear on this connection.

The 30lbs wing is more suitable for a lighter profile diving rig such as a single 12L steel cylinder whereas the 40lbs is ideal for divers who want that "extra bit" of lift for emergency assistance or to carry heavier cylinder setups like a 15L cylinder.

      • Lifetime warranty on inner bladder RF welded seams
      • Lift capacities: 30lbs or 40lbs
      • Outer shell 1680-denier ballistic nylon / Inner bladder 400-denier Nylon

      Halcyon Backplate and Harness

The Halcyon Secure Harness fitted to the stainless steel or aluminium backplate allows for infinite adjustability, providing a perfect fit for all divers.

Whether you are diving wet or dry you will find the Halcyon backplate with a harness stable and well-fitted. The five-point system ensures a snug fit and eliminates tank roll and drift.

      Halcyon Backplate and Harness

Halcyon backplates have been refined to provide the highest-quality finish and materials available. Small details, like the unique bends near the bottom of the plate, create an ergonomic curve, increasing diver comfort.

Bent D-rings in the shoulder facilitate one-handed storage of accessories like backup lights or stage bottles. Complete adjustability of D-rings eliminates inappropriate attachment points.

The utility holes allow easy mating with the MC Storage Pak to stow an SMB or to fit a drysuit inflation system.

Which backplate to use?  While not set in stone, aluminium backplates are generally preferred by travelling or wet suit divers as they are lighter. The popular backplate for drysuit diving is stainless steel, where the additional weight is a benefit (spreading out the weight needed to compensate for buoyancy while taking it off the diver's waist).

      • Stainless steel: High-grade, polished 304 stainless steel
      • Aluminium: high-grade hard-coat aluminium
      • Bare backplate weight (appx): Steel 2.2kg / Ali 0.8kg
      • Size: 26cm x 39.3cm

      Eclipse componenets

      Halcyon Single Tank Adapter

The stainless steel Halcyon Single Tank Adapter is designed to attach a backplate and single wing onto the single cylinder. The secure cam bands come with stainless steel buckles and Octogrip Pads to prevent sliding.

      Halcyon Diver

      Halcyon ACB Weight System

The integrated Halcyon Active Control Ballast (ACB) Weight System pockets are an ideal solution for divers seeking quick-release weight. Each weight pocket can hold up to 5lbs/2.3kg soft or hard weights.

The vertical orientation consumes less space and the side release buckle prevents accidental weight loss but can be quickly released. The removable weight pouch features an easy-carry handle.

A simple tri-glide connection secures the ACB pockets (Active Control Ballast) on the harness waistband and allows the mounting of a primary light behind.

      Halcyon MC Storage Pak

The Halcyon backplate pocket is the most efficient means to store any of the various Halcyon inflatable markers with ease. Stowing your favorite lift device in a Halcyon Storage Pak provides a hassle-free storage place without compromising the ability for rapid deployment of a SMB or lift bag.

      Halcyon Regulators

      Halcyon H-50D First Stage

The Halcyon H-50D first stage is a high-performance diaphragm design is fully sealed and purpose-built for harsh conditions like ice or environmentally contaminated environments. Diaphragm first stages are historically popular with cold water divers, and the Halcyon H-50D was engineered for extreme conditions.

      Halcyon H-50D first stage

      Environmentally sealed

The balanced, environmentally sealed diaphragm first stage performs better in cold water than any other diaphragm regulator while supplying consistent performance at varying tank pressures and depths; you will enjoy smooth, easy breathing throughout your dive.

The dry, balance chamber diaphragm design prevents water entry into the first stage mechanism and enhances a trouble-free operation; this is true even in the coldest conditions.

      First stage ports

Two opposing high-pressure ports allow you to choose where to route your SPG and allow the use of accessories. Most Halcyon divers route their pressure gauge to the left, but the Halcyon H-50D allows flexibility with any configuration you choose; these options provide freedom to support personalised and advanced hose routing configurations.

Four low-pressure ports allow you to customise your hose routing for comfort and convenience. The H-50D features four stationary low-pressure ports with high flow options, ensuring the best air delivery with up to 15% more air than other LP ports.

      • Balanced, sealed diaphragm
      • Dry balance chamber
      • 2 x High-pressure Ports, 4 x Low-pressure Ports (3/8)
      • 300-bar DIN, compatible with 40% Nitrox

The Halcyon 50D Single Cylinder Regulator Set is an excellent long hose setup for single-cylinder diving. The robust Halcyon H-50D first stage is paired with a Halcyon Halo second stage as a main and Halcyon Aura as a backup regulator. The set has a long main regulator hose and a short backup regulator hose.

Both Halo and Aura second stages feature an Air Control Vane (ACV) that offers the ability to fine-tune breathing. The ACV uses vacuum-assist technology to reduce the work of breathing and increase diver comfort.

This level of refinement is available on all Halcyon second stages. ACV in the “dive” position gives powerful breathing support, while ACV in the “Halcyon” position helps prevent free flows; this can be helpful on the surface, when diving in currents, while scootering, or when the Aura is used as a backup regulator.

Primary 2nd Stage Regulator - Halcyon Halo

The Halcyon Halo second stage offers steadfast reliability and impeccable performance; two methods of breathing adjustment make it the top choice for demanding divers.

      Halcyon Halo second stage

The Halo provides amazingly smooth performance in all conditions providing unsurpassed performance with enhanced technology.

Breathing underwater should feel natural, and that experience is one of the things that most clearly separates Halcyon’s second stages. You will be hooked as soon as you experience the smooth, high volume of air delivered by a Halo.

      Balanced, adjustable downstream valve

Balanced, downstream valve offers incredibly smooth breathing in all conditions. The design slightly offsets the force of the downstream air entering from the first stage, allowing reduced spring tension and a decreased inhalation resistance.

      Adjustable inhalation control

Adjustable inhalation control refines breathing effort through an easy access control knob; this allows the demanding diver to fine-tune the second stage’s air delivery.

      • Compatible with 40% Nitrox (outside the EU)
      • Adjustable downstream valve
      • Air Control Vane

Backup Second Stage Regulator - Halcyon Aura

Halcyon Aura second stage regulators provide a simple, compact design that makes breathing underwater feel natural. This high-quality second stage delivers air in a smooth, dependable fashion.

      Halcyon Aura second stage

Halcyon’s Aura second stage comes with a single adjustment control and a pre-set inhalation effort that suits most common diving situations; this feature makes it a common selection as a backup regulator.

      Classic downstream

Classic downstream valve style second stages have an impressive safety record and are commonly accepted as an extremely reliable design.

Part of their reliability results because the downstream valve opens in the same direction as the incoming airflow; a spring counteracts the force of the incoming air.

This design requires a small inhalation to overcome the spring tension and open the valve. The spring pressure is adjusted at the factory and allows easy breathing and consistent performance.

      • Compatible with 40% Nitrox (outside EU)
      • Non-adjustable downstream valve
      • Air Control Vane

        Halcyon Master Pressure Gauge

        Halcyon Master SPG

The 63mm Halcyon Master Gauge is well suited as a primary SPG. The clear display is easy to read in all diving conditions. High-quality materials, and a highly visible, luminescent face make this a common favorite among divers in all environments.

        • Diameter 63mm
        • 0-360bar
        • Nickel-plated brass
        • Mineral glass lens
