Why Portland?

We’re located on the Isle of Portland (in Dorset) because Portland has been one of the most popular scuba diving locations in the United Kingdom even before we set up operations here back in the year 2000.

On one side, we’re minutes away from the sheltered waters of Portland Marina and Harbour, while on the other, it’s just a brief walk to reach our famous scuba diving destination Chesil Cove and start of the 16-mile-long Chesil Beach.

Portland’s location makes it ideal for scuba diving, freediving, snorkelling and other surface water sports activities.

Check out how many wrecks we have around here by clicking on Scimitar Diving's Wreck & Dive Sites chart!

Alongside dive clubs, many instructors and dive schools travel here to train and offer scuba diving certification ranging from open water diver to mixed-gas tech diving or rebreather diving levels.

Whether you’re doing a boat dive from Portland Marina or Castletown or a shore dive at Chesil Cove, Portland is well known for offering many possibilities: Reef diving to wreck diving and night diving, underwater photography or underwater videography. Anything other than cave diving is possible here.

Likely being the best-stocked diving shop in the UK, at Underwater Explorers we offer in-store scuba diving equipment advice and sales, as well as gas fills, to locals and visitors (read About Us).

But... If you’re googling “scuba diving shop near me” like some, look no further, there's DirDirect online.

Here at DirDirect, we list our cutting-edge equipment for worldwide delivery and we’ve got you covered whatever your level of diving: We’re your local dive store wherever you are in the world.

All that with over 20 years of experience especially in technical diving, from training to equipment, advice and sales.

The Apeks XL4 Ocea Regulators Grey with Flexi regulator hose presents a new concept of regulator to the diving market. One that comes with the inherent build quality and performance shared by all Apeks regulators, but having the prime objective of being the first totally sustainably produced regulator available.

Every manufacturing detail has been considered and adjusted to ensure each material and process has been optimised in the pursuit of minimal environmental impact. Partnership with PlasticBank, establishes the Apeks XL4 Ocea Regulators as the world’s first ocean plastic negative regulator.

  • Recycled polymers made from up to 70% post consumer waste (black components)
  • Bioplastic plastic parts made from non petroleum based sources.
  • Trivalent chrome plating uses less harmful chemicals and is kinder to the environment.
  • Eco brass is lead free, easier to recycle and has a higher tensile strength than traditional brass.

Environmentally sealed first stage

An environmentally sealed dry chamber prevents water from coming into contact with the XL4 Ocea 1st stage spring to stop freezing.

Ocea first stages are over balanced which allows for maximum performance at depth. This results in superior performance at depth.

  • Compact machined first stage based on the expedition tested Apeks DS4 platform.
  • Lead free brass is kinder to the environment and reduces the regulators footprint.
  • Trivalent chrome uses less energy than traditional chrome and is kinder to the environement.
  • 2 HP ports and 4 MP ports.

XL4 Ocea is compact and lightweight

Compact and lightweight XL4 Ocea second stage improves comfort and helps reduce jaw fatigue on long duration dives. The Venturi lever disrupts the airflow inside the Ocea second stage to prevent accidental free flows at the surface.

Patented Apeks Comfobite mouthpiece reduces jaw fatigue and secures the second stage more comfortably. Comfobite mouthpiece has a unique bridge that fits across the upper palate and does not require bite pressure to stay in place. Re-useable mouthpiece clip makes it simple to change mouthpieces in the field.

  • High performance pneumatically balanced lever operated poppet valve.
  • Large, over moulded self-flushing and controllable purge button.
  • Ergonomic Venturi lever is easy to use and locate.
  • Flexible nylon braided hose has better cold water performance than a traditional rubber hose.
  • Standard metallic hose connection for interchangeability.
  • Re-useable mouthpiece clip makes it simple to change mouthpieces in the field.
  • Durable and flexible rubber exhaust tee provides excellent bubble diversion.
