Why Portland?

We’re located on the Isle of Portland (in Dorset) because Portland has been one of the most popular scuba diving locations in the United Kingdom even before we set up operations here back in the year 2000.

On one side, we’re minutes away from the sheltered waters of Portland Marina and Harbour, while on the other, it’s just a brief walk to reach our famous scuba diving destination Chesil Cove and start of the 16-mile-long Chesil Beach.

Portland’s location makes it ideal for scuba diving, freediving, snorkelling and other surface water sports activities.

Check out how many wrecks we have around here by clicking on Scimitar Diving's Wreck & Dive Sites chart!

Alongside dive clubs, many instructors and dive schools travel here to train and offer scuba diving certification ranging from open water diver to mixed-gas tech diving or rebreather diving levels.

Whether you’re doing a boat dive from Portland Marina or Castletown or a shore dive at Chesil Cove, Portland is well known for offering many possibilities: Reef diving to wreck diving and night diving, underwater photography or underwater videography. Anything other than cave diving is possible here.

Likely being the best-stocked diving shop in the UK, at Underwater Explorers we offer in-store scuba diving equipment advice and sales, as well as gas fills, to locals and visitors (read About Us).

But... If you’re googling “scuba diving shop near me” like some, look no further, there's DirDirect online.

Here at DirDirect, we list our cutting-edge equipment for worldwide delivery and we’ve got you covered whatever your level of diving: We’re your local dive store wherever you are in the world.

All that with over 20 years of experience especially in technical diving, from training to equipment, advice and sales.

S620Ti is reliable and easy to breathe

The Scubapro S620Ti Second Stage embraces the best features of Scubapro's renowned S600 in an upgraded, state-of-the-art design.

Delivering excellent performance, the S620Ti's work of breathing has been reduced by 37% over the Scubapro S600 second stage, providing effortless airflow under all dive conditions.

The large purge button improves water circulation, and the new exhaust tee directs bubbles out of the field of view. It's a stellar combination that can be relied upon to deliver top-line performance in all dive conditions.

The full titanium inlet tube is ultralight, the large purge button improves water circulation, and the re-engineered exhaust tee increases performance while directing bubbles out of the field of view.

  • Air-balanced valve smoothes the inhalation effort at varying depths and supply pressures.
  • Rugged reinforced technopolymer case and the front cover can withstand years of aggressive diving.
  • Titanium barrel is rugged, anti-corrosion and lightweight for long-term reliability.
  • Uses the S600's large diaphragm inside a compact casing for maximum breathing sensitivity.

Scubapro MK19 EVO First Stage

The compact, lightweight Scubapro MK19 EVO First Stage, with its environmentally sealed system, dry ambient pressure chamber, plus user-friendly LP port swivel turret, this regulator system is uniquely well-suited to handling cold water and the harsh diving conditions often encountered by technical divers.

The Scubapro MK19 EVO adopts a new dry ambient pressure chamber that enhances freezing resistance while ensuring consistent airflow and maximum durability in the coldest conditions.

With a swivel turret and five LP ports which maximise hose routing options, this first stage is built not only for professional, military and technical divers but also for recreational divers who need superb cold water performance in a lightweight, small, compact size.

The MK19 EVO is designed to be the ultimate first stage for cold water or contaminated diving conditions. Its design makes it substantially smaller and lighter than the original MK19.

Air-balanced flow-through piston in a chrome-plated marine-grade brass body provides constant and effortless airflow unaffected by depth, tank pressure, or
breathing rate

An environmentally sealed system prevents water and pollutants from fouling the inner mechanism. Its dry chamber has a double spring, making it more compact and reliable.

Two opposing high-pressure ports allow the first stage to be positioned either up
or down and provide an optimum hose/transmitter layout. The swivel turret has four High-Flow LP ports plus one axial Super High-Flow LP port to maximise hose routing options.

  • Nitrox compatible up to 40%
  • Weight: INT 232, 885g; DIN 300, 665g

  • Airflow at 2900psi/200bar: (l/min/SCFM): >6,900/244

  • Intermediate pressure (psi/bar): 133-142/9.2-9.8

DIN or A-clamp first stage?

Most of our divers prefer DIN fitting on the 1st stage regulator. A DIN regulator has a threaded post which screws into the inside of a DIN tank valve and has no additional metal or braces that run behind the valve. This, together with the position of its o-ring, creates a more secure seal on the tank.

YOKE (or A-Clamp) 1st stages have an oblong metal brace that completely encircles the tank valve when in place and is screwed down on the tank valve when the yoke screw is tightened.

Both regulators seal to the scuba tank through an o-ring where the o-ring on a Yoke valve is in the tank valve itself as opposed to DIN regulators with their own o-ring.

DIN fittings are commonly accepted as more secure, but Yoke valves are common throughout North America and recreational tourist destinations. A DIN regulator can be adapted to Yoke valves by using an A-clamp adapter for travel.
